OK, bear with me here: this one’s a bit odd. Musician, animal rights activist, and all-round moody bastard Morrissey has teamed up with PETA to create a videogame adaptation of The Smiths’ 1985 vegetarian hit ‘Meat Is Murder’ titled This Beautiful Creature Must Die.

The game, which you can play on your mobile or through a browser, is a pretty simple affair in which you save 8-bit animals from grisly meat grinder deaths. It’s easy at first, but before long it all starts to go a bit Super Meat Boy on you.

Best of all, the whole thing is soundtracked by a chiptune cover of the original ‘Meat Is Murder’, which somehow manages to capture Morrissey’s distinctive strain of misery through the medium of beeps and boops.

“This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression. You don’t get that from Pokémon Go,” said Morrissey, presumably without the slightest hint of irony.

Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to go vegan or not, but I am going to go play some Super Meat Boy, so well done PETA and The Smiths – you’ve brightened my day.
