God damn it Michel Ancel, this is just cruel.

The Rayman creator has once again teased the long-awaited, much-delayed, sort-of-cancelled, probably-never-going-to-happen sequel to 2003’s Beyond Good and Evil. No doubt he’s taking some perverse pleasure in cruelly raising all of our hopes, only to dash them against the bitter rocks of inevitable disappointment.

“Thanks #ubisoft for making this possible !” he writes, taking painstaking care to not tell us what ‘this’ is. Is the game still happening? Is it some spin-off? Or just a disappointing merchandising tie-in?

It was rumored earlier this year that Nintendo was chipping in funds to make the game an NX exclusive in the sort of transparent play for critical goodwill I’d object to if I wasn’t so thrilled at the prospect that it might bring us a sequel to the cult classic. Some people have taken Ancel’s new post as confirmation of those rumors, despite there being no mention at all of Nintendo or the NX.

There’s just a man, and a pig, and a mystery. And no doubt disappointment to come.
