Criminals, beware! Detective Pikachu is here and he’s not messing around.

Bafflingly, he’ll be the star of the first-ever live-action Pokémon movie after studio Legendary Entertainment picked up the rights from The Pokémon Company yesterday.

A new Pokémon film was obviously an inevitability, especially after Pokémon Go took over all of our lives, but this is a legitimately surprising move. Great Detective Pikachu is a Japan-only 3DS downloadable game that came out this February, starring a gruff-voiced take on the adorable rodent sporting a Sherlock-esque deerstalker cap.

Even by Pokémon standards it looks pretty nuts, but I suppose it is an easy way to put the yellow guy at the heart of the film, which was always going to have to happen. Though if this means we get a Western release of the game, that can only be a good thing, because we all need more crime-solving Pikachu in our lives. Don’t even try to deny it.
