Watch Dogs 2 contains a brief teaser for a sci-fi game by Ubisoft that it turns out is actually real – but might never come out.
Let’s go back to the beginning. Watch Dogs 2, out this week and apparently filled with intricately detailed nudity, has a mission where you visit the fictional offices of Ubisoft San Francisco in order to steal the trailer for a sci-fi game codenamed Pioneer – a trailer you then get to watch part of.
To add to the whole meta experience, footage of that trailer popped up over the weekend, ahead of the game’s official release yesterday.
It turns out that wasn’t just a fun side mission though – Kotaku cites “sources” who say the clip contains real footage from a project in the works at Ubisoft.
The only problem? Between the time they decided to add the Easter egg and Watch Dogs 2‘s release, Pioneer has reportedly hit serious development problems, and may now never come out after all.
“The project was supposed to be announced next year,” said one source. “That won’t happen now and Pioneer is now being ‘retooled.’”
“When they decided to make the Easter egg in Watch Dogs 2 they didn’t know it was going to be like this so it’s a bit awkward,” added another source.
So, to recap: there was a real leak of a fictional leak of a real videogame that may never exist. Clear?
