Hackers rejoice! Ubisoft released two videos today announcing Watch Dogs 2. Now, I played Watch Dogs on PS4; hell, I even bought it a second time on PC for teh modz. And you know what? I enjoyed it. It was a fresh take on the open world genre, and being a Chicagoan, it was cool to drive around my city with reckless abandon. I also thought their integration of PVP was really innovative and I far prefer it to GTA V’s ‘Here’s where everyone is, go hunt them down.’
Watch Dogs 2 seems to up the ante deliciously. Setting it in San Francisco and starring a new protagonist, Marcus, feels like a good way for them to announce the return of the franchise. From what I’ve seen so far, the gameplay looks a lot more varied, a lot faster, and your character’s outfit is definitely cooler than that weird Assassin’s Creed/Dick Tracy hybrid trench coat you were forced to wear for eternity in the last game.
The first video is purely cinematic, and by the looks of it, Ubisoft is really trying to appeal to the Gen Z demographic: lots of laptops, neon colors, stickers, drones. You know, stuff the kids like. (I’m 33).
But! If you have some more time on your hands, I’d recommend watching the world premiere developer featurette, also released today, which shows off a reasonable amount of gameplay.
Rest assured we’ll be learning more about the game next week at E3, at which point I’ll have hopefully more to report. Watch Dogs 2 is set to release on November 11th, 2016, so if I survive until then, I’m looking forward to buying it twice on two systems. You know, for teh modz.
