When you meet the Pope, it’s customary to present him with a gift. Makes sense — it’s not like the Catholic Church is known for its wealth or anything.

So when YouTuber MatPat was invited to meet the High See as part of a summit that explored how the internet brings people together, he presumably thought long and hard about what to get for the man who has everything, and settled on Undertale.

“I gave the Pope this game because it speaks his language,” MatPat said in a 16-minute (!) video about the gift. “This year is his self-proclaimed year of mercy for the Catholic Church, a period celebrating forgiveness and compassion when one could otherwise choose to harm a person. And what’s the recurring theme throughout Undertale? Mercy.”

Undertale represents an evolution for gamers, and what they expect from the games that they play, making it the single best representative of where we are as a community today,” he added. Creator Toby Fox (who we interviewed once, and you should go read it and stuff) said he was “honored.”

Since the game hasn’t had any physical release, he presumably offered Pope Francis a Steam code, though no word yet on whether he bought a nice card to go with it.
